Is an MRI scan safe?

AI-generated illustration. This is not a real patient or a diagnostic image.
Magnetic resonance imaging uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves. It does not use the ionising radiation used in X-rays and CT scans. This does not mean it is completely safe in every circumstance: safety screening is necessary before scanning.
What if you have an implant?
Tell the team about any pacemaker, hearing implant, vascular clip or other implant, and bring your implant card if available. Some devices are suitable only under specific MRI conditions. Knowing only that an implant contains metal or was fitted recently is not enough. Metal objects worn or carried must also be removed.
Pregnancy and contrast
Pregnancy does not automatically rule out a necessary MRI without contrast. The clinical question and expected benefit are assessed, including in the first trimester, and unnecessary tests are avoided. Using gadolinium contrast is a separate decision. Always disclose pregnancy, kidney disease and previous reactions.
Discuss claustrophobia or difficulty keeping still in advance. The scan can be planned with appropriate equipment, communication and, when necessary, support supervised by a clinician. Do not take sedatives on your own initiative.
